Aquilegia saximontana, also known as the Rocky Mountain blue columbine or Alpine blue columbine, is a perennial herb that produces flowers in late spring and early summer. The plant has blue-green, glabrous leaves that are divided into two lobed leaflets. The plant can grow to be 2–25 cm (0.8–9.8 in) tall. The flowers are nodding and can be white, yellow, blue, lavender, violet, cream, or tan in color They have white petal tips and blue spurs that are hooked at the tip, which some believe resemble an eagle’s talons.

The plant is native to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where it grows in sub-alpine and alpine areas at elevations of 3,300–4,000 m (10,800–13,100 ft) It prefers well-drained soil and can grow in full sun or partial shade

The name Aquilegia comes from the Latin word Aquila, which means eagle. The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies, and the flowers can be eaten raw on a sunny day if you beat the bees to them. However, the leaves, seeds, and roots are toxic and should not be consumed unless you are in a survival situation.
