Description

Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae, with over 200 species. They are native to warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions worldwide and are known for their large, showy flowers. Hibiscus plants can grow into herbs, shrubs, or small trees and are cultivated for their flowers, leaves, stems, seeds, and roots.

Hibiscus are large, showy, trumpet-shaped flowers with five or more petals stacked together that come in many colors, including white, pink, orange, red, yellow, purple, and multi-hued patterns with various sizes. Petal tips are wavy and open wide in the morning, then begin to wilt by late afternoon.

Hibiscus flowers typically have five sepals, but the sepals may also be connected at the base to form a calyx with five teeth. The sepals cover the petals in length. Hibiscus sepals are the pointed ends of the calyx at the bottom of a hibiscus flower, and they can protect the bud. The sepals are green in color and leaf-like in structure. When the hibiscus blooms, the petals grow and the sepals open.

The hibiscus flower has hundreds of stamens in a single flower. The filaments are united in two bundles. The stamens are monadelphous, which means the filaments are fused to form a single tube, while the anthers are free. The stamen is the male reproductive part of a hibiscus flower. It’s made up of two parts: the anther and the filament. The anther is where pollen develops. The filament is a stalk-like structure that carries water and nutrients to the anther and helps position it for pollen dispersal. They are an example of a complete flower, which means it has all four whorls: sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils.

Hibiscus leaves are simple, ovate, and 4 to 12 cm long, with a spiral arrangement around a stalk. They are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed dentate.
