Description
Hydrangeas, also known as Hortensias, are flowering plants that are native to Asia and the Americas. The word “hydrangea” comes from the Greek words hydros (water) and angos (jar). This is because some species of hydrangeas are known for being thirsty for water. There are over 70 species of hydrangea, and most of these are native to eastern Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea. Hydrangeas come in various colors, such as blue, pink, and white. However, the coloring may depend on the type of soil in which it grows; some hydrangeas produce blue flowers in acidic soils and pink in alkaline soils. Certain cultivars produce better color than others. Hydrangea is an amazingly diverse genus full of summer flowering species. Hydrangeas have four petals, and some species are found with 5 petals. They are typically a mixture of showy, sterile, and less prominently fertile flowers. Most hydrangea flowers work well when cut or dried for decorative purposes.
Hydrangea flowers are made up of sepals, which are petal-like structures; they are typically 2 to less than 5.5 cm in diameter. Hydrangea sepals can change color depending on the soil’s pH and aluminum content. If Hydrangea is planted in alkaline soil, the sepals will be pink; in acidic soil, the sepals will be blue. Red or pink blooms result from neutral or basic soil (pH 7 and above), whereas blue blooms indicate acidic conditions (pH less than 7).
