        Azaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsusi (evergreen) and Pentanthera (deciduous). These vibrant shrubs bloom in the spring, with flowers lasting several weeks. Their joyful hues include red, pink, purple, white, and more. Most are evergreen, originating in Asia, while North American native varieties are deciduous.

        Azaleas come in hundreds of varieties, ranging in form and size, and are funnel-shaped, somewhat two-lipped, and often fragrant. The flowers of rhododendrons, on the other hand, are more often bell-shaped. Azalea flowers typically have only 5 projecting stamens, as compared with 10 (or more) in rhododendrons. Intermediate forms, however, do occur. But, azaleas are toxic to humans and pets. Primarily bloom in spring, although some cultivars rebloom later in the growing season.
