Description
Strawberries are bright red with a juicy texture and an oblate kidney shape. Some strawberries are heart-shaped and cute; however, strawberries can be variously shaped as oblate, long-conic, conical, conical-elongate, conical-rounded, spherical, and reniform. Strawberries are sweet, juicy, and have a slightly sour taste. They also have a pleasant level of acidity that balances out their sweetness.
The strawberry plant is a species in Fragaria and a member of the rose family, Rosaceae, and the fruits are edible. Strawberry plants are low-growing, perennial herbs with compound leaves, fibrous roots, and white flowers. They can be white, blue/purple, yellow/golden, or red/pink, and they can tolerate shadier sites.
Strawberry plants reproduce through stolons, also known as runners, which are horizontal stems that grow along the ground and produce new plants called daughter plants. Each runner has a tiny plant at the end that will grow roots and establish itself in the soil. Once the daughter plant is established, the runner will dry up to separate it from the mother plant.
Strawberry flowers are small, five-petaled flowers that grow on the strawberry plant in early spring. They are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female parts. The male parts include the pollen-carrying portion of the flower, and the female parts must individually receive pollen grains to attain complete pollination. Strawberry flowers can pollinate themselves, but there is a chance of cross-pollination with pollen from a neighboring plant.
The strawberry calyx (sepal) is a leaf-like structure that forms the outermost layer of the strawberry fruit. The calyx is part of the reproductive structure of the flower and plays an important role in protecting the budding flower buds. Strawberry calyxes are generally green and small, triangular to spear-shaped. They are usually shorter and narrower than real flower petals.
Strawberry leaves are oval or elongated, have serrated edges, look thick, and have thin hairs. The leaves are usually slightly shiny and light to dark green, with the back of the leaf tinting green-white. The leaves can be up to 4 inches long and wide, and the leaves are divided into three leaflets, which is called a trifoliate.
