Sakura, or Japanese cherry blossoms, is a genus of Prunus flowering plants. They are in the rose family (Rosaceae) and have five sepals (calyx) at the stem that frame petals and a stigma in the center. Sepals are modified leaves that grow in a ring at the bark level of the buds and blossoms’ stems. After the flowers fall, the sepals remain.
