Description
Hydrangeas are a genus of flowering shrubs with more than 70 species and six main types. There are Macrophylla, Paniculata, Arborescens, Quercifolia, Petiolaris, and Serrata.
The original name of Hydrangea is Hortensia; it’s also an Estonian, French, and Spanish word that means Hydrangea, which has the scientific name Hydrangea macrophylla, ‘Hortensia’.
The name Hydrangea comes from the Greek words hydór, meaning “water,” and aggeión, meaning “vessel,” which refers to the cup-like shape of their fruit.
Hydrangeas are distinguished for their round flower heads and are beautiful in various colors, but most hydrangea flowers are actually white.
The white hydrangeas can be changed to other colors, such as blue, purple, red, and pink flowers, determined by the base pH level in the soils they’re grown in. Some hydrangeas produce blue flowers in acidic soils and pink in alkaline soils. The leaves on the plants can vary from large leaves to oak leaves. All of which display bright, beautiful colors throughout the fall.
Bwlows are six main types of Hydrangea:
- Hydrangea Macrophylla (Bigleaf Hydrangea)
- Hydrangea Paniculata (Panicle Hydrangea)
- Hydrangea Arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea)
- Hydrangea Quercifolia (Oakleaf Hydrangea)
- Hydrangea Petiolaris (Climbing Hydrangea)
- Hydrangea Serrata (Mountain Hydrangea)
