Description

Gerbera flowers, also known as Transvaal daisies and Barberton daisies, are a genus of plants in the Asteraceae family that are native to tropical Africa. Gerbera flowers have vibrant colors, velvety petals, and long bloom seasons. They come in various colors, including red, orange, yellow, pink, and white.
Gerbera flower petals are ray florets, which are the outermost petals of a gerbera’s composite bloom. The center of the flower, or “eye”, contains disc florets, and the fuzzy ring between the two is made of trans florets. Gerbera flowers have stamens, which are small yellow structures located in the trans florets, which are the fuzzy rings between the ray florets and the disc florets. The stamens are responsible for producing pollen.

Gerbera flower sepals are hairy, specialized organs called pappus bristles that surround the base of the flower. Sepals are the vegetative part of the flower and are green in color.

Gerbera flowers are single-stem flowers with hairy leaves. The flower stem is leafless and has a single, large cup flower that is velvety-soft.
Gerbera flowers grow on long peduncles that originate from the center of the plant. The flowers sit on leafless stems that are about 6 inches above the plant’s foliage. Gerbera flowers can be daisy-shaped and 2 to 5 inches in diameter.

Gerbera leaves are elliptical, lobed, petiolate, or have a petaloid base, and are often leathery and felted beneath. They can be up to 10 inches long and are pubescent on the underside. The mature leaves of most Gerberas resemble large dandelion plants and can grow 8 to 24 inches (20 to 60 cm) tall
