Description

Euphorbia milii, commonly known as the Crown of Thorns, Christ Plant, or Christ’s Thorn, is a popular succulent houseplant. It is a shrub with fleshy, bright green leaves 1.5–6 inches long and 0.59–1.8 inches wide. It has small, bright yellow-greenish flowers that are surrounded by showy, bright red, inconspicuous bracts. These bracts are the showy part of the “flower.” They come in various colors, like red, pink, yellow, or white, and have a rounded or oval shape. They typically have two bracts per “flower,” resembling petals. Euphorbia milii can bloom throughout the year in tropical climates, while indoors, it usually flowers from late winter to fall with proper care.

The leaves are simple, elliptical to obovate (egg-shaped with a wider end at the tip) in shape, and generally small, ranging from 1.5 to 5 cm (0.6 to 2 inches) long and 0.8 to 1.8 cm (0.3 to 0.7 inches) wide. The veins are not very prominent on Euphorbia milii leaves. They may be faintly visible as a central midrib and smaller lateral veins branching out.

Stems are thick, fleshy, and woody with prominent grey spines, giving the plant its nickname “Crown of Thorns.” They are thick, sharp, black, and up to 1/2 inch long. Be aware that Euphorbia milii contains a milky white sap that can be irritating to the skin and eyes.

The plant blooms throughout the year with tiny flowers in clusters. The true flowers lack petals and sepals. The leaves are present on new growth and fall off quickly. There are several cultivars of Euphorbia milii available, offering variations in flower color, bract size, and even some with nearly thornless stems. While the showy bracts are often mistaken for flowers, the true flowers are the small, greenish structures nestled within. For the Chinese, Euphorbia milii plants are believed to be the tree of good fortune.
